So true.  I graduated college in 1975.  I had to bust my a** to graduate.  Term papers were required in nearly every class.  Pop quizzes were frequent.  Mid-terms and finals were all but mandatory. 

My son is a senior at my alma mater.  Term papers are not required, all quizzes are announced, and mid-terms and finals are up to the prof.  And you can’t blame racism in this case because the school is 98% white.
