Immigrant families struggle to pay tuition at UT Austin after Texas Dream Act is repealed

Mariel and her mother are among those families dragging suitcases and carrying boxes as UT students return to campus the weekend before the first day of class.

The college senior is moving into an apartment for the first time. It’s supposed to be exciting, but Mariel is a mixed bag of emotions.

Until a couple weeks ago, Mariel didn’t know if she could go back to school.

In June, the U.S. Department of Justice sued Texas to end access to in-state tuition for students without legal status, arguing the Texas Dream Act discriminated against U.S. citizens. Within hours, the state conceded.

KUT News is using Mariel’s first name only because of privacy concerns over her immigration status.

Mariel had been set to graduate from UT Austin next spring with two degrees, one in biology and another in Spanish. She would be a step closer to becoming a doctor.

“That was the one thing that I felt like I had, [it] was my education. That’s the one thing I thought I had that would never be taken away from me,” Mariel said. “And for that to happen, it was like … I was crushed.”

After they heard the news, Mariel’s family tried to stay positive. They thought maybe it would take a while for the state to eliminate the program. But in mid-July, university officials asked Mariel for proof of lawful status to keep paying in-state tuition.

“I’m not considered a Texas resident, so I have nothing,” she said.

Mariel was born in Mexico but grew up in Texas. During her first three years of college, she paid in-state tuition and could get financial aid through the Texas Dream Act. She and her family paid about $13,000 a year for her dorm and meals.

Even that required a big effort, Mariel said. Her parents each worked two jobs. But her mom, Mireya, said it was worth it.

“We’d have to limit ourselves. But as long as it was for her education, so she could have a better life than us, then we didn’t mind,” she said. KUT is also using only her first name because of privacy concerns.

With the Texas Dream Act repealed, Mariel’s tuition went from $11,000 — which she would pay with financial aid — to $22,500 without financial aid, which she also lost access to.With living expenses, Mariel’s family would have to pay $29,500 a semester. And since she still had a year to go, that meant close to $59,000.

The annual income for the family of six is about $40,000.

Mariel is one of the about 57,000 students enrolled in Texas public universities who were affected the lawsuit ending the Texas Dream Act.

According to the organization Every Texan, in 2021, students without legal status were awarded $10.6 million in financial aid. But that same year, students without legal status paid $71 million in tuition and other fees.

Barbara Hines, the former director of the Texas Law School Immigration Clinic at UT Austin, helped push for the Texas Dream Act over 20 years ago. She said keeping these families from accessing in-state tuition has repercussions beyond higher education institutions.

“The business community supported the in-state tuition because it leads to a qualified workforce,” she said. “So this is really bad for the community.”

The Texas Immigration Council estimates the state could lose over $460 million in economic activity every year: $244.4 million in lost wages and $216.9 million in spending power.

The group said a college degree increases the earning potential by 57% for students without legal status.

“Why would you want to deny kids who have lived their entire lives the opportunity to go to college,” Hines said.

Passage of the Texas Dream Act in 2001 was a bipartisan effort backed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry. Then, 22 other states and the District of Columbia followed Texas in making college more affordable for students without legal status.

Now, advocates worry that just as Texas set a precedent to pass the law, other sates may soon follow in taking away in-state tuition. So far, the federal administration has filed lawsuits against Kentucky, Minnesota and Oklahoma.

Immigrant groups, students and higher education institutions like Austin Community College, have tried fighting the decision in Texas courts. But so far their efforts have not been successful.

Mariel is the only child in her family who is not a U.S. citizen. She was brought to the U.S. when she was 14 months old. Her parents wanted her to have more opportunities. But now, Mireya said she sometimes feels guilty.

“I was the one that brought her here. She didn’t decide to come. She’s not guilty of anything,” Mireya said. “For her, this is her world.”

Two weeks before classes started, Mireya and her husband decided their daughter’s dreams couldn’t be taken away just like that. They had worked too hard to get where they are now. So, they took out a $15,000 loan from a family friend.

Advocates don’t know how many students were unable to pay out-of-state tuition and had to drop out.

But even though she’s back in school, Mariel has had to make some adjustments. She dropped her Spanish degree and is trying to finish her biology degree in the fall semester by taking eight classes.

“I have mixed feelings. I’m happy to be back and to be able to finish my degree,” she said. “But I feel a lot of guilt for making my parents pay that much.”

Her mother took on a third job cleaning offices. And her dad, who does landscaping, has also increased his work hours.

“I’ve told my husband, I won’t be happy until my girl can achieve the dreams we have in mind,” Mireya said. “Until then, I won’t be at peace.”

Mariel is hopeful things will change, and she’ll be able to go to medical school in Texas. If not, she has considered getting her degree in Mexico — a country she hasn’t been to in almost two decades.

The Trump Trap: Turning the Left Into Pavlov’s Dogs

The president has barely broken a sweat in coaxing leftists to reveal just who they are.

The multiple ceasefires and peace deals Trump has brokered between long-time enemies? Well, we’ll just react as we did with the Abraham Accords in the Middle East and ignore them, focusing instead on how Trump has failed to end the war in Ukraine – a war that began under Biden. And we can throw in a bit more about how Trump just loves Vladimir Putin, whose interference, as we know, handed the 2016 election to Trump – just ask Hillary Clinton. And we will also ignore the trillions in foreign investments attracted by Trump; we’ll just act as if that isn’t happening. Trump’s tariffs, designed to level the playing field on trade and bring in trillions in revenue going forward? Let’s shriek about the certainty that this will immediately cause a spike in inflation.

In fairness, these Democrats are often prone to inflicting harm on themselves without being baited by the president. The annual summer meeting of the Democratic National Committee? Let’s kick it off with a land acknowledgement to show our solidarity with Native Americans of centuries past. Oh, and then we’ll send out Tim Walz to demonstrate afresh what a brilliant choice he was to run with Kamala Harris, who didn’t even bother to show up for the festivities. And we’ll cheer Walz as he engages in repeated profanity and attacks the size of Trump’s ankles (cankles is the operative word). Yeah, that’s it – let’s make fun of the president’s circulatory ailment – Americans love it when we ridicule people for their medical issues. Then, let’s cheer when Walz follows that up by announcing that he won’t be “petty.” And let’s top it off with a real doozy, a left-wing minister saying that if you don’t support DEI, you’re not a Christian.

Trump and Pavlovian Democrats

The beat goes on. Democrats are trapped in their own vile hatred and willful ignorance of an electorate no longer tolerating the wokeness they unleashed upon the country during the Biden era. The expression “Pavlov’s dogs” refers to experiments on man’s best friends that led to the discovery of classical conditioning, or associative learning. By pairing a neutral stimulus (like a bell) with an unconditioned stimulus (food), dogs learned to associate the bell with food and would salivate at the sound of the bell alone, demonstrating a conditioned response. Is this not the single most precise analogy to today’s left?

Politics is supposed to be hard. It certainly was for Trump as a novice a decade ago, when he was sucker-punched by the left day after day. But this time around, with the full cooperation of the Democratic Party, a fully seasoned President Donald J. Trump has barely broken a sweat in luring his enemies into revealing exactly who they are.  In the Bible, God promises believers to “restore the years the locusts have eaten.” Trump ran for president to effect just such a restoration to a country spiraling off the rails. Little did he realize that the Pavlovian Democrats would provide him with such a heaping helping of unwitting aid and comfort.

It’s been like taking candy from a baby. President Trump, armed with a thorough understanding of the left’s debilitating and seemingly incurable Trump Derangement Syndrome (the clinical designation is TDS), has been shamelessly and effortlessly baiting his sworn enemies into loudly opposing his many initiatives supported by strong or even overwhelming majorities of the American people. It has almost been too easy.In fact, the president has turned it into an art form. He realizes that all he needs to do to coax leftists into adopting the very positions that cost them dearly in the election last November is to propose something, anything, popular with the public, secure in the knowledge that Democrats will loudly oppose it. Call it the Trump trap.

And the Dems still fall for it every time, behaving as if the 2024 election was nothing more than a bad dream. Close the border and stop illegal immigration dead in its tracks? We must protest and call him a racist. Round up and deport criminal aliens? Let’s unleash violent demonstrations against it and turn an alleged wife-beater, gang banger, and sex trafficker into our new icon. Prohibiting men from competing against women in sports? Oh, we will definitely vote against that, and overwhelmingly so. The Laken Riley Act, which orders the deportation of illegal aliens charged with crimes? No way we’re getting on board with that. Send the National Guard into DC, a move that immediately reduced assaults, murders, and carjackings? Let’s start calling Trump – again – a fascist, dictator, authoritarian, or, as Joe Biden would say: you know, the thing.

We’re Just Getting Started

There’s more material on this subject than can be contained in a single article, but let’s give it the old college try. Defunding sanctuary cities and states? Let’s double down on the critical importance of shielding illegal aliens, especially the criminals among them, from law enforcement. And let’s send out the poster child for lawlessness and homelessness, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, to try and imitate the inimitable Trump with vitriolic all-caps messages. And by all means, let’s repeat our decades-long mantra: The immigration system is “broken” and in need of “comprehensive immigration reform.” Oh, and while we’re at it, let’s renew our perpetually empty call for a “two-state solution” in the Middle East. And we can never be heard uttering a discouraging word about Hamas.

We must attack the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) because nothing needs to change in Washington, and defend the civil service because, you know, Americans love their federal employees. And we must fight against Trump’s efforts to end campus antisemitism by threatening to reduce federal funding to these far-left institutions. Who doesn’t love progressive radicals influencing young Americans on campus and those Marxist academics lecturing us from the comfort of their faculty lounges?

Ending cashless bail that allows accused criminals out on their own recognizance? Racist for sure. Firing a member of the Fed who, evidence strongly suggests, has engaged in mortgage fraud while, in a delicious irony, she helps to set mortgage rates for the country? Well, that’s both racist and misogynistic. Deep-sixing Iran’s nuclear threat with bunker-busting bombs? Well, that’s probably illegal in some way, and it won’t set their program back by more than a few months.

The multiple ceasefires and peace deals Trump has brokered between long-time enemies? Well, we’ll just react as we did with the Abraham Accords in the Middle East and ignore them, focusing instead on how Trump has failed to end the war in Ukraine – a war that began under Biden. Exclusive – Netanyahu: You Can’t be ‘MAGA’ If You’re Anti-Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Breitbart News on Wednesday in an exclusive interview that the antisemitism that has grown on the political right is not only anti-Israel, but anti-American and anti-Trump.

Netanyahu addressed the problem he referred to as the “woke right,” which arose as some conservative pundits — including a few who had once been supportive of Israel — opposed Israel in the “12-Day War” against Iran, as well as any American involvement on Israel’s side.

The issue arose in a discussion of antisemitism, which has become familiar on the left in recent years, and is resurgent on the right:

Breitbart News: Antisemitism has been rising around the world, and many of us had become used to seeing it on the extreme left, but now it does seem to be rising on the right as well — and not just from traditional sources on the right, the neo-Nazi fringe and so forth, but there are in the United States, certain popular conservative commentators who appear to have drifted in that direction. Where is that coming from? Is that based on foreign influence? Is it religiously based, somehow? Where is it coming from, in your view, and how do you stop it?

Netanyahu: There’s been a lot of foreign influence over the last two decades. There have been NGOs [non-governmental organizations] from various corners, … primarily from Europe, but also from from Qatar. That is, you know, spent billions on American universities, vilifying, vilifying Israel, vilifying Jews, and also, frankly, vilifying the United States. Because if you open Al Jazeera in Arabic, not in English, and you just track it over the years, it’s been horrible. It’s been antisemitic, anti Israeli, anti American, and all that was left to accumulate primarily in academia, you know, and from there, it sort of distributes itself elsewhere.

But I can tell you this: look, the Jewish people have had this problem of vilification for for thousands of years, and we were accused of everything. In the Middle Ages, we were accused of killing Christian children and using their blood, okay? I mean, and these lies, these, these horrible blood libels always preceded massacres. They spread from one country to the other, and there was very little we could do about it. We were vilified, and then we were massacred, until this culminated in the worst massacre of them all — the Holocaust. The Nazis said we were spreading vermin — you know, just like in the Middle Ages. What has changed since the rise of Israel is not this vilification and not these cycles of latent antisemitism that burst forth from time to time, as it’s happening now. What has changed is that it’s not followed by massacre[s], because when they try, as they did on October 7, Hamas tried, we’re able to fend them off, defend ourselves and defeat our enemies. That’s the change that Israel has brought. But I think we have the continuous battle for truth, and I appreciate the opportunity that you have given me to tell the truth.

And let me say one more thing — you talked about the “woke right”? Some of these people call themselves MAGA [Make America Great Again]. They’re not MAGA. If you support Iran, Iran tried to kill President Trump twice, not once, but twice. Iran has put a price on his head. … That’s Iran. Iran has murdered, has killed and wounded more Americans, thousands of them, in Iraq and in Afghanistan with their explosive devices. They killed 251 American Marines in Beirut. They bombed American embassies. They burn American flags. They chant, “Death to America.” The first thing they did when this regime took power was to take over 50 hostages in the American embassy.

Iran wants to annihilate the United States. Israel is the best ally of the United States.

Israel is fighting Iran, and you can’t be MAGA if you’re pro Iran, you can’t be MAGA if you’re anti-Israel. President Trump understands this, and he stands very strongly with us. And I, you know, I really appreciate the straightforward and courageous way that he he faces people, sometimes in his own constituency, because that’s what leaders, from time to time, have to do.

Since taking office, Trump has launched the most aggressive campaign against antisemitism in American history, focusing on university campuses but also fighting anti-Jewish hatred in the media and in politics.

Pope Leo Tells Catholic Politicians: You Can’t be Catholic and Pro-Abortion

Pope Leo XIV has issued a clarion call to Catholic politicians worldwide, urging them to align their actions with the Church’s teachings on the sanctity of life.

This new message follows on the heels of a recent pro-life message where the Pope emphasized the need to reject “voices of death” and embrace a culture of life.

Pope Leo firmly rejected the false notion of Catholic politicians saying they are “personally pro-life” but voting for abortion: “There is no division within the personality of a public figure: there is not on one side the politician, and on the other the Christian.”

“Rather, there is the politician who, under the gaze of God and of his conscience, lives out his commitments and his responsibilities in a Christian manner,” he said.

Please follow LifeNews on Rumble for the latest pro-life videos.

You are therefore called to strengthen yourselves in faith, to deepen your knowledge of doctrine—particularly of social doctrine—which Jesus taught to the world, and to put it into practice in the exercise of your responsibilities and in the drafting of laws. Its foundations are fundamentally in harmony with human nature, with the natural law that all can recognize, even non-Christians, even non-believers. You must not therefore fear to propose it and to defend it with conviction: it is a doctrine of salvation that seeks the good of every human being, the building of societies that are peaceful, harmonious, prosperous, and reconciled.

The Holy Father therefore told them: “The first—and the only—advice that I shall give you is this: unite yourselves ever more closely to Jesus, live from Him, and bear witness to Him.”

In “certain Western societies where Christ and His Church are marginalized, often ignored, and sometimes ridiculed,” he said, “only union with Jesus—Jesus crucified!—will give you the courage to suffer for His name.”

Addressing a global audience, Pope Leo XIV called on Catholic politicians to reflect the Church’s teachings in their legislative decisions, particularly on issues like abortion, euthanasia, and the treatment of the vulnerable. This message indirectly challenges Catholic politicians to uphold the sacredness of life in their public roles, aligning their policies with the Church’s moral framework.

Pope Leo’s pro-life stance is not new. As Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, he condemned abortion and advocated for compassion toward the unborn, elderly, and disabled. In a 2025 homily in the Suburbicarian Diocese of Albano, he declared, “God’s mercy calls us to protect every life, especially those society overlooks—the child yet to be born and the elderly nearing their journey’s end—because each bears Christ’s face.”

The pontiff’s words carry particular weight in the context of ongoing global debates over abortion and end-of-life issues. His call to reject “voices of death” is seen by pro-life advocates as a direct challenge to policies that undermine the sanctity of life.

Libertarian Party of North Carolina Denounces Federal Overreach Under Trump Administration

The Libertarian Party of North Carolina has denounced what it calls a dangerous expansion of federal power under the Trump administration, warning that recent policing actions by the government undermine constitutional rights and “erode the foundations” of a free society.

In a statement published August 19, LPNC Chair Ryan Brown said that recent domestic-policing measures by the administration reflect a “blatant disregard for the rights of American citizens.” He pointed specifically to the deployment of military personnel in California and Washington, D.C., calling them violations of the Posse Comitatus Act, a federal law limiting the use of armed forces in domestic law enforcement. Brown argued that such policing should be carried out by “properly trained and accountable civilian agencies.”

The statement also criticized reports of stop-and-frisk tactics in Washington, D.C., stating the practice violates Fourth Amendment protections, disproportionately targets minority communities, and has not proven effective in reducing crime. Additional referenced concerns include federal efforts to criminalize homelessness, which the party described as inhumane and counterproductive, and the use of unmarked, unidentifiable, masked, and armed federal agents to detain residents, a tactic it likened to those of authoritarian regimes.

The statement also questioned what it called misplaced security priorities. Brown contrasted “reduced protective measures” for Ghislaine Maxwell and secrecy surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein case with stepped-up domestic-policing measures, arguing that resources are being shifted away from high-profile criminal cases toward policies the party said diminish civil liberties.

Brown said the state party remains committed to promoting individual freedom and limited government, and called for immediate steps to restore accountability and transparency in law enforcement, strengthen civil-liberties protections, and address what he described as the “root causes of social problems.” He urged elected officials to voice similar opposition.

“We call on all elected officials, regardless of party affiliation, to stand up against these abuses of power and defend the rights of all Americans,” Brown continued. “We urge the Trump administration to immediately cease these unconstitutional and dangerous practices.”

Newsom deploys state police to major cities after Trump threatens to send more troops to California

SACRAMENTO, California — Gavin Newsom announced Thursday he’s sending new teams of state police to major California cities —contrasting the effort with Donald Trump’s unilateral deployment of National Guard troops in Los Angeles and Washington.

The California Highway Patrol troopers will target crimes like auto theft and drug dealing in Los Angeles, San Diego, inland regions and the San Francisco Bay Area. Trump recently threatened to send Guard members to San Francisco, saying he would “clean up” the city.

Newsom insisted he was “not reacting and responding to anything” relating to Trump and emphasized the state’s deployment, unlike the president’s, was not being done over the objections of local governments.

“As it relates to the president in particular, he’s doing things to people, not with people, and it’s a point of profound, consequential contrast. He’s de facto militarizing American cities,” Newsom told reporters.

The announcement is Newsom’s latest attempt to take the lead in offering a competing Democratic vision of governance to Republican Washington ahead of a likely 2028 presidential run. The governor has laced into the Trump administration for its law enforcement tactics, on Wednesday telling POLITICO that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents work as the president’s “private police force.” White House border czar Tom Homan said the governor was an “embarrassment” in response.

“If he had an ounce of integrity he’d be calling President Trump and thanking him for making LA safer,” Homan said.

Newsom’s move comes ahead of a ruling in a lawsuit California filed against the federal government over its deployment of troops to Los Angeles. The governor said the state’s attorneys have deposed members of the Trump administration, Border Patrol and the military and that he was preparing for a decision from the Northern District Court of California “any hour, any day.” The ruling is slated to have sweeping implications for Trump’s plans to send troops to more blue cities across the U.S.

“I think its consequences will be profound,” Newsom said.

California has also sent state police to Bakersfield, San Bernardino and Oakland. The expanded forces will work with local law enforcement, sharing intelligence and placing more patrol cars on the street to deter crime, the governor said.

Totalitarian, Psychopathic Love of Terrorism in Minnesota

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) denounced criticism of the transgender community … after FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the Minneapolis Catholic school shooter had insisted that people should treat him as a “transgender woman.”

“Anybody who is using this as an opportunity to villainize our trans community or any other community out there has lost their sense of common humanity,” Frey said. “We should not be operating out of a place of hate for anyone. We should be operating from a place of love for our kids. Kids died today.”

Frey claimed that he had “heard about a whole lot of hate that’s being directed at” the transgender community.

Frey’s comments come after Patel confirmed on Monday that two people were left dead, and 17 others were injured. Patel also confirmed that the gunman was Robin Westman, “a male born as Robert Westman.” [from Breitbart News, 8-27-25]

Funny. He denounces all who criticize anyone who pretends to be the opposite of their actual gender. But he doesn’t have a word to say against violent sociopaths who shoot up a school full of little kids.

We still live in morally inverted times.

Minnesota’s Lt. Governor was pictured (before the shooting) wearing a shirt that advocates using violence to “protect” trans kids.

Will there be ANY accountability? Even verbally? No way. They’ll nominate her for Vice President.

Leftist lunatics: “Transgenders” get a free pass for shooting school children. Sick.

GAME ON: Trump Calls for RICO Charges to Be Filed Against George Soros

Joseph Vazquez

August 27th, 2025 2:36 PM

President Donald Trump appears to have finally drawn a line in the sand against the radical leftist, anti-American political chaos machine that George Soros has fueled with his ungodly billions over the years.

Trump took to Truth Social August 27 to publicly lambast the leftist billionaire and called for criminal charges to be filed against: “George Soros, and his wonderful Radical Left son [Alex], should be charged with RICO because of their support of Violent Protests, and much more, all throughout the United States of America.”

The president continued: “We’re not going to allow these lunatics to rip apart America any more, never giving it so much as a chance to “BREATHE,” and be FREE. Soros, and his group of psychopaths, have caused great damage to our Country!” Trump then issued a warning to Soros and his cohorts: “Be careful, we’re watching you!”

Trump’s allegations against Soros are not without basis. It was discovered that Soros had fueled at least $7,610,000 into the unhinged Indivisible Project, which was responsible for organizing the infamous “No Kings Protests” along with other leftist orgs where some had devolved into violence. In addition, MRC Business also documented the Soros connection to the Tesla fires that occurred earlier this year as a result of violent protestors running amok in its April 22 report Eco-Kingpins: How the Soros Empire Funds and Steers the Global Climate Change Agenda. The events involved activists vandalizing Tesla vehicles and attacking dealerships and charging stations.  Tesla CEO Elon Musk had identified the Soros-funded Indivisible Project as one of the groups responsible for the Tesla protests.

Soros was also reported to have funneled at least $12.6 million into two unhinged left-wing groups that were behind a string of radical “Free DC” protests across Washington, D.C. to stifle Trump’s efforts to deploy the National Guard and federalize the city’s police department to crack down on widespread crime in the nation’s capital in August.

As the New York Post summarized, “‘Do not obey in advance’ and ‘Take up space’ are among Free DC’s ‘guiding principles,’ and the group urges supporters to ‘go outside at 8:00 PM and bang pots and pans, sing, chant, or make noise for five minutes’ every night of this occupation.’”

The Open Society Foundations, true to form, claimed deniability for the actions or initiatives of its grantees responsible for the protests. OSF retorted against Trump’s accusations in an X post: “The Open Society Foundations, founded by George Soros and chaired by Alex Soros, do not support or fund violent protests. Allegations to the contrary are false, and the threats against our founder and chair are outrageous. Our mission is to advance human rights, justice, and democratic principles in the United States and around the world.”

This, however, is OSF’s modus operandi: Give money to extremists, then look the other way and deflect responsibility when the funding directly or indirectly supports nefarious actions perpetrated by its grantees. As Bongino Report content manager and Soros researcher Matt Palumbo put it, “You can’t give money to an arsonist and then feign surprise when he uses it to fund fires.”

OSF’s latest obfuscation echoes similar deflections OSF gave when MRC Business previously exposed how the Soros machine had been funding pro-Hamas groups for years, including  those that directly celebrated the barbaric carnage Hamas unleashed on Israeli citizens October 7, 2023.

At the very least, the Soros machine’s connections to the protests warrant investigation, given the enormous anti-American, pro-criminal network it oversees. If any explicit criminal activity is in fact discovered — well — as the lefty media repeatedly reminded conservatives: “No one is above the law.”

Vladimir Putin Embarrassed as Expert Outlines why Russia’s Summer Offensive has Completely Failed

logo

According to a military and security analyst, Russia’s summer offensive in Ukraine has utterly collapsed. Julian Röpcke, a journalist for the German news outlet Bild, has been closely following the war since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

In a recent column, he outlined four primary reasons why he believes Putin’s summer campaign in Ukraine has crumbled. One of Russia’s main objectives in the east was to capture the city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region – a crucial logistical hub for Ukraine’s army.

Despite positioning troops at the city’s gates since January, Röpcke contends that all attempts to storm it or sever its supply have been unsuccessful so far.

Earlier in August, several hundred Russian saboteurs managed to infiltrate Pokrovsk, sparking fears of a significant breakthrough for the Kremlin’s forces.

However, within three weeks, all the Russians in Pokrovsk had either been killed or captured, with a Ukrainian officer telling BILD: “We are holding the city and have prepared a few surprises for the Russians. The military situation is better than it appears on maps.”

After Ukraine’s invasion of Kursk and subsequent withdrawal in March, Putin instructed his army to establish a 600-kilometer “buffer zone” within the Chernihiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions.

Yet, Röpcke points out that Moscow currently controls less than 70 kilometers along the Ukraine – Russia border. “Here, too, Putin’s military failed completely,” he penned. The military analyst has described Russia’s situation in southern Ukraine as “even more devastating” noting that despite the annexation in 2022, the front lines in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson have remained largely unchanged.

Although annexed in 2022, the front line here [Zaporizhzhia and Kherson] has remained largely stable since then,” he observed.

Röpcke also suggests that Russia‘s air defenses are faltering, with Ukraine increasingly capable of executing long-range drone strikes that wreak havoc on Russian energy facilities.

‘Dear Prudence’: The Story Behind The Beatles’ Song

Written in Rishikesh, ‘Dear Prudence’ has transcended its original inspiration to become one of The Beatles’ best-loved songs.

Over the end of the Esher demo of “Dear Prudence,” John Lennon can be heard explaining the origin of the song: “No one was to know that sooner or later she was to go completely berserk under the care of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. All the people around her were very worried about the girl because she was going insane. So we sang to her.” The girl in question was Prudence Farrow, the 19-year-old sister of American actress Mia Farrow. During the stay, Prudence had locked herself away in her hut at the ashram in Rishikesh, India, where she and her sister were studying Transcendental Meditation alongside The Beatles, Donovan, The Beach Boys’ Mike Love, and others. She was meditating far longer than anybody else, and the others were beginning to worry about her state of mind.

“Prudence Farrow got an attack of the horrors, paranoia, what you’d call these days an identity crisis, and wouldn’t come out,” Paul McCartney recalled. “We all got a bit worried about her so we went up there and knocked. ‘Hi, Prudence, we all love you. You’re wonderful!’ But nobody could persuade her out. So John wrote ‘Dear Prudence, won’t you come out and play…’.”

John told Playboy magazine, “Mia Farrow’s sister, who seemed to go slightly balmy, meditating too long, wouldn’t come out of the little hut we were living in. They selected me and George to try and bring her out because she would trust us. She went completely mental. If she’d been in the West they would have put her away. We got her out of the house. She’d been locked in for three weeks and wouldn’t come out, trying to reach God quicker than anybody else.”

For “Dear Prudence,” John deployed a fingerpicking style he’d learned in India under instruction from Donovan, a skilled folk musician who had studied under the likes of Bert Jansch and Davey Graham. Donovan recalled that John was a diligent student: “It’s a difficult style that requires perseverance. When John had it down he was so pleased to find a whole new way of songwriting emerge. That’s what happens to a natural songwriter when you get a new set of performing skills. He immediately wrote ‘Dear Prudence’ and ‘Julia’.”

Back in England, The Beatles (minus Ringo, who was in self-imposed exile on Peter Sellers’ yacht in the Mediterranean) moved to Trident Studios in London’s Soho, where they had already recorded the master version of “Hey Jude,” and it was here that they assembled “Dear Prudence” across August 28-30, 1968.

‘It was a beautiful thing to have done’

Though the final version was labeled “Take 1”, that is a rather misleading name, as the initial backing of John and George on guitars and Paul on drums was recorded many times, but, unlike at Abbey Road where everything was kept, at Trident, it would appear that the trio simply recorded a new take over the previous one.

Once the backing – John and George on guitars, Paul on drums – was complete, a number of extra tracks were overdubbed, as they enjoyed the luxury afforded by Trident’s eight-track facility. Paul added bass guitar and piano, while John laid down double-tracked vocals. John, Paul, and George were assisted in a track of vocals, handclaps, and tambourines by roadie Mal Evans, Apple Records recording artist Jackie Lomax, and John McCartney, Paul’s visiting cousin, who also sang on the backing track. Paul even threw in a few notes on the flugelhorn for good measure, drawing on the experience of his brief teenage dalliance with the trumpet. The completed track would become one of the most memorable moments on “The White Album”, much imitated but never bettered.

As for the song’s inspiration, Prudence herself claimed to have no memory of hearing it during her time in India: “George was the one who told me about it. At the end of the course, just as they were leaving, he mentioned that they had written a song about me but I didn’t hear it until it came out on the album. I was flattered. It was a beautiful thing to have done.”
