The Big Money Behind the Push for 1619 Project Education

Many people have become aware of how Mark Zuckerberg’s Center for Technology and Life nonprofit foundation influenced the 2020 elections.

But few are aware of how his company, Meta, and other far-left companies are also underwriting 1619 Project educational indoctrination programs for future voters. Taxpayers help subsidize these efforts. Those who profit are the world’s largest publisher, Penguin Random House, and the global media company, the New York Times, whose newspaper has the second-highest circulation in the nation.

The New York Times, a for-profit company, had its product promoted by a nonprofit company, the Pulitzer Center, which designed the prepackaged curriculum and pushed it, unvetted, into 3,500 schools immediately after the 1619 Project was published as a special issue of the August 18, 2019, New York Times Magazine. Coincidentally, Sam DolnickNew York Times assistant managing editor, sits on the board of the Pulitzer Center. The Pulitzer Center also posts promotional materials, such as editor Jake Silverstein’s op-ed touting the 1619 Project books and webinars on teaching the 1619 Project, where subscriptions for the newspaper are pushed to teachers.

Penguin Random House, which published The 1619 Project: Born on the Water, a picture book, and The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story, a pseudo-scholarly, 500-page neo-Marxist expansion of the magazine (copyright held by the New York Times) also enjoys the services of the Pulitzer Center to market its books to educators and librarians, and to fight laws intended to keep it away from students.

Penguin Random House also exploits nonprofit opportunities to sell its books. Markus Dohle, the CEO of the German group Bertelsmann that owns Penguin Random House, donated $500,000 via the nonprofit Dohle Book Defense Fund to PEN America to fight “censorship.” As Daniel Greenfield has written, Penguin Random House specializes in publishing racist “anti-racist” tracts by Robin DiAngelo, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Ibram X. Kendi, and pushes them into schools. Kendi’s screed, “Progress,” which refers back to his own book Stamped, appears in The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story. Before publishing The 1619 Project books, Penguin had quickly produced a collection edited by Kendi and Keisha Blain (University of Pittsburgh history professor, who, in the Nation claimed that the “obsession over critical race theory is a new manifestation” of  “anti-Blackness and anti-intellectualism”). Four Hundred Souls: A Community History of African America, 1619-2019, featured short knock-off essays by contributors to the 1619 Project and mostly far-leftists, such as Donna Brazile, the Democrat Party-Clinton operative, New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie, radical academics Robin D.G. Kelley and Peniel Joseph, Sherrilyn Ifill, Barbara Smith (on the Combahee River Collective), Black Panther and Communist Angela Davis (on “The Crime Bill”) and “Black Lives Matter” founder, Alicia Garza. Most recently, Greenfield has exposed how the company is remaking Dr. Seuss into an avatar of social justice.

Prior to release of the two 1619 Project books in November, the publisher had set up a deal for getting “woke” followers of Hannah-Jones to buy copies and donate them to schools and libraries, where laws addressing curriculum do not apply. This was through a nonprofit, diversebooks.org, which was largely funded by Penguin Random House. By March 1, more than 6,000 books had been bought and donated through retailers at bookshop.org.

The Pulitzer Center, which has enjoyed the largesse of Democrat donor Pierre Omidyar and funding from the Zuckerberg Foundation, has served as the clearinghouse for 1619 Project educational materials.

The Pulitzer Center also helped Penguin Random House by running a pilot program that gave advance copies of the book to 35 educators in fifteen states and the District of Columbia. Last month a post-pilot education conference  hosted by the Pulitzer Center revealed how these two books are intended to be used. (Penguin Random House has also provided free, downloadable educational guides written by Learning for Justice, the educational arm of the Southern Poverty Law Center.) Penguin Random House, which certainly wants to get its books to every student, provided the moderator, Allan Spencer.

The webpage for the conference describes Meta, “formerly Facebook,” as “lead supporter” for the 1619 Project Educational Materials Collection at the Pulitzer Center. Additional funding comes from “Humanity United, the Trellis Fund, the Art for Justice Fund, Open Society Foundations [Soros], The Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.” The 1619 Project creator, Nikole Hannah-Jones, has appeared on several of the Pulitzer Center webinars (alongside teachers union president Randi Weingarten and others) to encourage and instruct teachers on using the materials. Teachers have received $5,000 grants to implement the materials and write lessons.

A good part of the Pulitzer Center’s mission these days is “resisting” state laws against the use of the 1619 Project in classroom instruction. So efforts are being made to get the books to other students and in other ways—such as in libraries, and after-school and prison programs. One of the sessions involved a Stetson University program advertised as offering “quality liberal arts education” to inmates at Florida’s Tomoka Correctional Institution. The presentation by  Andy Eisen, who teaches history, and Pamela Cappas-Toro, professor of World Languages and Cultures, offered a view into the three-day “mini-unit,” Public History and The 1619 Project, created by the non-profit Community Education Project program. As one of the assignments, involving inmate-students collecting information about their sugar consumption from products in the commissary and linking results back to sugar plantations that relied on slave labor revealed, the program has little to do with history, languages, or the liberal arts. It follows, instead, the 1619 Project mantra, that every injustice in the world—down to availability of sugary snacks in a prison commissary—has its roots in slavery.

From Texas, a state that has passed anti-CRT/1619 Project bills, Amanda Vickery, professor of education at the University of North Texas, served on the panel, “Teaching the Next Generation of Teachers, The 1619 Project Books in Schools of Education,” and was commended for her bravery and dedication to “resistance.” She described how she used the free copies in classes for her future teachers. As typical, the idea of historical accuracy was not even broached. Instead, Vickery expressed the reigning 1619 Project idea that history is merely an expression of “power,” with competing narratives, and the importance of students telling their own stories. (Such standards presumably justify the (false) claim in the picture book that “white people” went into Africa and kidnapped “mommies” and “daddies” in order to make them slaves.)

Unfortunately, a number of history professors are supporting the 1619 Project. Not surprisingly, as revealed in The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story, such Marxists as Gerald Horne and Eric Foner have advised the 1619 Project from the beginning! Johns Hopkins University history professor Martha S. Jones has jumped on board, contributing essays to both book collections, on  “The American Revolution” and “citizenship,” and making frequent appearances. She gave the keynote address at the conference, but revealed the ahistorical purpose; the 1619 Project, she told teachers, was meant to “challenge us to engage in a powerful thought experiment.”

A number of teachers shared how they used the materials in their classes (one of which was described as 99 percent black with most of the students lagging several grades in reading ability). One teacher used the Project to help instill in her students the idea that they were descended from African “kings and queens” (though not apparently that kings and queens in Africa owned slaves which were often sacrificed in funeral rituals for royalty).

As one reader told me about the use of the 1619 Project in his child’s high school class, the aim is to set students against each other by race. Criticisms or disagreements are cast as evidence of the student’s racism. I advised the student to use the sources in my book, Debunking The 1619 Project, to rebut the claims being made.

Everyone from kindergarteners to inmates are being targeted for indoctrination by companies that are profiting from an alliance with non-profits funded by left-wing political operatives—and taxpayers, against their wishes and the law. Taxpayers subsidize what these companies would normally contribute to the tax base but which they loop into tax-free subsidies to market their own products, as Penguin Random House does with Diverse Books and the Dohle Book Defense Fund. Education professors use class time in state universities to push Random House’s books to future teachers. Woke librarians eagerly accept donated books.

Recently, Hannah-Jones on Twitter asked professors to share how they use the 1619 Project. A sampling of the responses is alarming. In addition to being used in history and education courses, the 1619 Project is infusing English, paralegal studies, sociology, public health policy, and who knows what else.

Alarmingly, according to The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story, more 1619 Project books are in the works. It may seem amazing that the one magazine issue has had such an impact. But it should not be, when you consider that two of the biggest and most powerful media companies in the world are behind it.

It’s So Easy to “Stand With Ukraine” While Ignoring Tyranny in D.C.

“Standing With Ukraine” while supporting Biden, Fauci, Pelosi, China, Soros & Co. in their destruction of freedom makes you a loathsome hypocrite.

***********

Former White House physician Ronny Jackson, who served in the role under the Obama and Trump administrations, said on Friday that Democrat President Joe Biden needed to immediately resign to spare putting the country through more suffering because Biden is not mentally fit to be president.

“Biden doesn’t know what’s going on with Ukraine,” Jackson tweeted. “He doesn’t know what’s going on with ANYTHING! He’s not cognitively capable of leading. He needs to RESIGN before our country suffers any more.”

We’re screwed with or without Biden. The Democratic Communists are an occupation, openly hostile to the U.S. Constitution, individual rights and economic freedom. We have to get rid of all of them, not just Biden.

Science should Analyze What’s Left of Biden’s Brain

I am astonished and impressed. I watch Joe Biden like you watch a rare bird at the zoo. If I don’t throw peanuts at him to find out how he eats, it’s only because he is too far away. It’s only fair to admit it. He’s the best at what he does — let’s face it! No matter how hard you search through the history of the most incompetent people to ever populate the White House, you won’t find anyone remotely close. It’s him. He is a walking accomplishment. A prodigy of science. He is number one. The best. Biden is the best at being a complete idiot.

Some idiots shine in situations of maximum tension and end up betraying their own incompetence; they get things right out of fear. Some are so stupid that sometimes, by mistake, they do something right when they wanted to do it wrong. But Biden goes beyond that. Biden is 100 percent high-class ineptitude. Biden is the only one capable of being wrong every time, every day, in everything.

Not that I had any doubts about it. I have always bet heavily on Biden being unfit for the presidency, and even less so as a leader of the West. But that doesn’t stop me from being amazed at his ability to take even more steps in the wrong direction. First, he doesn’t know anything. Then he misdiagnoses the problem every time. Then he studies the three worst ways to solve it, guaranteeing that none of them will end well. But then, at the height of his prowess, he has a knack for choosing the worst of them. Always the worst. He’s a genius. Don’t think it’s that simple. It also takes a certain talent to be that dumb.

He proved it to us again this week. Good. You have a problem with oil. You’ve got a problem that’s increased with the war in Ukraine, but you had it before. I mean, even before the war, you were trying really hard to deal with it really badly. Remember, Joe? Green energy and all that mumbo jumbo. The taxes you love so much. The cancellation of your own smart energy projects. Ruining industries and impoverishing workers. You had already done all that badly. But now, you have decided to make it all the more worse: you have gone to kneel, to ask for help, to the most disgusting (and also the most idiotic) dictator that you had within reach. You have gone to Nicolás Maduro to give wings to the murderous Venezuelan regime, to boost the morale of its tyrants, and to offer it a way out of its isolation with the West. To let him laugh at the United States, which is the country he hates the most in the world, and also the country he insults the most. You have given that orangutan the greatest joy of his life.

All, in the end, for a handful of oil that you may not even need any time soon. You’re the most useless guy to ever enter the White House, Joe, useless to the point of exoticism. I mean, I’m fascinated by your interplanetary stupidity. Science should analyze what’s left of your brain because analyzing your soul is something we couldn’t do without maximum protection suits against the most contagious and lethal viruses. You are a case apart, the greatest discovery of science, perhaps, the missing link.

Maduro is a despicable dictator who mistreats his people and finances the most corrosive and lethal ideas against freedom around the world. He is a great enemy of the United States and all that it stands for. Sending a delegation to canoodle with him is disrespectful to your people and to all the allies the Chavista regime attacks every chance it gets.

Yes, you have an oil problem and you want to isolate violent Putin. Okay. But to get close to Maduro is like looking for the gas leak by lighting yourself with a damn lighted match, Joe. Haven’t any of your advisors suggested that you shouldn’t be so miserable? Haven’t any of your friends told you that if you embrace Maduro, you’ll never sit at his table again? I don’t know, Joe, change your advisers and change your friends, or change your drug dealer. Maduro can recommend several.

This Invasion was Brought to You by—Western Environmentalists

For more than 40 years, the environmentalist movement has been warning that global warming is the result of mankind’s burning of fossil fuels and poses an “existential threat” to human and other biological life.

This is one of the many grandiose lies the Left uses to reshape, if not destroy, Western civilization. Other grandiose lies used to achieve that result include America being systemically racist; that violent crime is the result of racism and poverty; men give birth; sex and gender are “nonbinary”; and that former President Donald Trump was a Russian asset.

It should now be obvious that the “Greens,” the environmentalist movement — not global warming — poses an existential threat to humanity. For the first time since the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, the world faces the possibility of a nuclear war. Russia is explicitly threatening use of nuclear weapons should the West come to the defense of Ukraine and has put its military on nuclear alert. Given the possibility that Russian President Vladimir Putin is deranged, the threat is far more real than it was in 1962 when Nikita Khrushchev was the leader of the Soviet Union. Putin believes he embodies Russia (just as Hitler believed he embodied Germany). Khrushchev did not believe he embodied Russia.

Were it not for the green movement, Putin would not have been confident that he could get away with invading Ukraine. During Trump’s presidency, and due to his policies, the United States became independent of foreign oil for the first time. Within months of assuming power, the Democratic Party, an extension of the environmentalist movement, forced America to revert to dependence on foreign oil, including Russian oil. Beholden to the environmentalists, candidate Joe Biden made promise after promise to curtail oil and gas production: no new fracking on government land, no drilling in the Alaskan Arctic, and shutting down the Keystone pipeline.

Putin got the message.

So, thanks to environmentalists, not only is America once again dependent on foreign oil, Germany is dependent on Russian oil. Angela Merkel, another in a long line of foolish Germans, even shut down Germany’s nuclear reactors — which the greens in Germany applauded. They applauded it — despite the fact that nuclear energy is the only viable non-carbon energy that can sustain a country — because the environmentalist movement is not nearly as interested in the environment as it is in restructuring society. The environmentalist movement is as interested in protecting the environment as the communist movement was in protecting workers or the defund-the-police movement is in protecting blacks.

The Democrats came into power in 2021. The average closing price of oil in 2020 was $39.68 a barrel; the closing price of oil in 2019 was $56.99 a barrel. As of this writing it is $138.00 a barrel. The extremely high price of energy — a direct result of the environmentalist policies of the Democratic Party and the liberal and Left parties in Europe — is one of the two primary reasons for the ever-increasing rate of inflation. (The other reason is the result of another Democrat policy: the printing of trillions of dollars.)

Serious inflation leads to very bad things. The Nazis did not come to power because of their antisemitism or even because of the Versailles Treaty as much as they did because of the terrible inflation under the Weimar Republic.

And any day now, the Biden administration will announce an agreement with Iran that will enable Iran to take in billions of dollars for its oil. Yet another victory for Biden, the Democrats and the environmentalists. This agreement, brokered — incredibly — by Russian diplomats, will enable Iran to sponsor worldwide terror, resuscitate Iran’s economy and continue its quest for nuclear bombs.

But none of this matters to Biden, the Democratic Party, The New York Times or any other left-wing institution — so strong is the grip of the environmentalist cult and so influential are the uber-wealthy environmentalists who support the Left. They would rather see Ukraine destroyed, the potential for a nuclear war and the decimation of the world economy than allow fracking, drilling or even an oil pipeline between Canada and the United States.

Concern for the environment is a good thing, but the environmentalist movement is not.

Environmentalists use the environment to create a social revolution just as communists used workers to create a social revolution.

Its activists are fanatics.

Its consequences are nihilism.

Environmentalists are, intentionally or not, in collusion with Putin to undermine America and the West.

Even Jimmy Carter Wasn’t This Bad

He was actually better. He at least acted like he thought inflation, gas shortages and cultural decline were bad things. He was hapless, but he didn’t laugh at your pain, he knew what year it was and you KNEW he was going away because elections were not yet rigged.

Biden’s policies are not irrational; they are evil.

He’s not mistaken; he’s trying to destroy the country.

In that context, EVERYTHNIG he’s doing makes logical sense. Mistakes of this magnitude are not innocent.

The Truth No Longer Matters — Even in America

How can you form rational, objective opinions about what’s going on with Ukraine, or anything else, if:

1) The media is brazenly dishonest, only reporting facts that support their narrative and political agenda, and suppressing facts when necessary in service of their woke, “progressive” narrative; and outright lying when necessary (as with the Trump/Russia hoax and so very much about COVID);

2) The government of the U.S., given the bought-and-sold Biden regime, the Deep State and the rotten, corrupt RINOs as well, is no less corrupt than the governments of Russia, Iran, North Korea, China or anyone else involved;

3) The narrative of the media and the government, including the U.S. government, is upside down of what it should be: In other words, instead of being on the side of objective truth, individual rights, private markets and freedom, the media and government of the United States is utterly the opposite — blatantly on the side of collectivism, statism, and the corresponding intellectual dishonesty to serve any expedient whim of the moment and even to advance outright tyranny (as we saw with Canada recently).

Objective truth is possible and necessary in order to form rational, life-sustaining judgments and to have any clue about what’s going on anywhere in the world, at any time. But, at this point in time, neither the American government nor the American media (essentially one and the same now) can be trusted. THAT is a first in the history of a previously free, generally decent country. We must come to grips with it, because there’s no way that what the American government tells us matters any more than what the Chinese or Russian governments are telling us.
